25 Dead, 50 Injured in Major Fire at Goa’s Arpora Nightclub

A deadly fire broke out shortly after midnight at Birch By Romeo Lane, a popular nightclub in Arpora, North Goa. The fire killed 25 people and injured more than 50. Many of the victims were staff members working in the basement, along with a few tourists who were visiting the club.

How the Fire Started

Early reports say the fire may have been caused by a cylinder blast. Witnesses heard a loud explosion, and within minutes, thick smoke filled the club.
When the fire began, around 100 people were on the dance floor. Many tried to run downstairs to escape, but the basement filled with smoke, trapping several people.

What Happened Inside

Officials said:

  • 3 people died from burns
  • The rest died due to suffocation because the smoke spread quickly
  • Most of the bodies were found in the basement area

Emergency teams received the first call at 12:04 a.m. Fire services, police, and ambulances worked through the night to rescue survivors and recover those who died.

Government Response

Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant visited the site early in the morning. He said it is a tragic day for the state and confirmed that the club had not followed fire safety rules. He also promised strict action against the nightclub management and any officials who allowed the club to operate without proper permissions.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sadness over the incident and announced:

  • ₹2 lakh for families of each person who died
  • ₹50,000 for those who were injured

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also shared his condolences and said the administration is working to support the affected families.

Local Reactions

Residents near the nightclub said they heard a huge blast before seeing smoke pour out of the building. Many called it one of the worst tragedies the area has seen.
Local MLA Michael Lobo said this incident shows the need for a full safety check of all nightclubs in Goa.

Investigation Underway

The police and fire department have begun a detailed investigation. They will check:

  • Whether the club was operating legally
  • If proper fire exits and equipment were in place
  • Who is responsible for the safety failures

Authorities have said that strict action will be taken once the investigation is complete.
