Modi and Putin Embrace as Europe Begs India to Stop the War

New Delhi, December 4, 2025 — Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in India today for a big two-day visit. Prime Minister Narendra Modi went to the airport himself to welcome the Russian leader.
The two leaders shook hands warmly and hugged each other before getting into the same car together. This is Putin’s first trip to India since the war in Ukraine started.

What’s Happening During the Visit
Putin will stay in India for two days. During this time, India and Russia will sign many new deals to work together on things like healthcare and business.
PM Modi has planned special events for Putin including:
• A private dinner
• A big state dinner party
• Important meetings
• A speech to Indian business leaders

Europe Wants India’s Help
Many countries in Europe have quietly asked India to talk to Putin about stopping the war in Ukraine. They told Indian officials: “Putin is your friend. He listens to you. Please ask him to end the war.”
Some European countries, especially those close to Ukraine, are very worried about the war. They think India can help because Modi and Putin have a good friendship.
PM Modi has said before that “wars cannot be won on the battlefield” and that talking is better than fighting.

Why This Visit Matters
This visit is important because it shows India is still friends with Russia, even though many Western countries have stopped working with Putin because of the Ukraine war.
India buys weapons and oil from Russia. At the same time, India also has good relationships with America and European countries. This makes India’s position tricky but important.
The whole world is watching to see what happens during Putin’s visit to India
